CHOOSE LIFE By: Pastor Ruth Chironna We are living in a time and season when it is easy to feel pressed in from every side. Many of us find ourselves facing financial stresses that we have not felt in a very long time. Our jobs are not as secure as we once felt they were. Some of us have already lost our jobs and are finding out that it is not as easy to gain employment as it used to be. We also find that these stresses affect our home life. We're not as patient with our loved ones as we once were, and we often wonder where our joy went. Then, we catch ourselves having frequent thoughts of, "Will it always be like this?" or "When will this season end?" Then, we find ourselves asking, "Father God, where are You in all of this? Have You forgotten about me?" Well, I have good news for you! God is still in control! He's still on the throne! And, He has never left us or forsaken us! Indeed, the children of Israel found themselves wondering, after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, if God was indeed going to bring deliverance to them and bring them into the Promised Land. As they were about to cross over into the Promise Land, God laid out for His children, His Covenant and the blessings and cursing. In Deuteronomy 30:15 and 19, God instructs: "See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity…So choose life in order that you may live…" Now, that sounds so easy to say, but how do we walk that out in the face of seeming death all around us? The first thing that we need to realize is that choosing life is a choice of our will and it's a daily choice. The word says, "…I have set before you today…" We have to make choosing life a daily practice because death will also be set before us as well. We need then to ask the question, "If I am to choose life, what does that look like, feel like, and how am I to walk that out?" If we continue to read in Deuteronomy 30:20, we find the key. The answer is three-fold. "By loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice and by holding fast to Him." The first part of choosing life is, "loving the Lord your God." In Matthew 22:37 it reads, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." |
